|Richard J. Allen, MD
Dr. Allen is a board-certified family physician. After
completing an undergraduate BS degree in 1973 in Biology from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, MI., Dr. Allen
attended Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit where he received his MD in 1977. After medical school,
he completed a 3 year residency at Family Medicine Residency in Saginaw Cooperative Hospitals. Dr. Allen
has been part of South Haven Family Physicians since 1980 and is a member of the Board of Directors at South Haven Community
Dr. Allen grew up in Kalamazoo, MI.. He is married with 4 grown children and has a brand new
grandson. He now has family in Central America as his son-in-law is from Nicaragua. Dr. Allen enjoys keeping up
with his 4 children, traveling to Central America, reading, bicycling, and hiking. "I have been studying Spanish
and enjoy trying to communicate in a second language."
Dr. Allen made his acting debut this past summer in
Our Town Players production of The Little Shop of Horrors.
|Susan Heinrich, M.D.
Dr. Heinrich joined South Haven Family Physicians in 1990 and is a board-certified family physician. Susan
graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor with an undergraduate BS degree in Microbiology.
She then spent four years at the University of Chicago Priztker School of Medicine in Chicago where she earned her
Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. During
medical school she completed rotations in rural residencies in Virginia and Arizona. Dr. Heinrich then
completed a three year training residency at Brown University Family Medicine in Rhode Island.
Dr. Heinrich has served on the South Haven Hospice board and was the first female chief
of staff at South Haven Community Hospital. She was blessed to assist mothers in the delivery of over 100
children at South Haven Community Hospital.
Susan (Futryk) Heinrich grew up in Trenton, MI. She
married her husband Todd in 1983. They have two school-age children. She enjoys reading great fiction,
boating, traveling and the beach. She loves her five-minute commute to SHFP.
|David M. Liscow M.D.
Dr. Liscow is a board-certified family physician. He
attended Duke University in Durham, NC where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. While an undergrad, Dr. Liscow
traveled alone for 6 weeks in South America. There he was struck with the importance of learning
and contributing a needed skill to people and decided to become a family physician He completed medical
school in 1982 at the University of Cincinnati, graduating in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. While in Medical School,
he worked on the Cherokee Indian Reservation in North Carolina. He completed a 3 year residency at The University of
Minnesota Affiliated Community Family Practice Programs which offered the primary care focus in which he believes.
He and his wife decided to live in a small town and settled with their 2 young sons in South Haven, MI where
Dr. Liscow joined South Haven Family Physicians in 1985. Their 2 grown sons have now left the small town
for the attractions of bigger cities.
Dr Liscow enjoys writing, reading, history, exercise, nutrition, rocks,
nature, and most things that interest his wife. He has traveled to the Andes Mountains in South America and
has hiked in Alaska. He says, "Any time I’m in view of the mountains or have a view from the mountains
is a special experience."
Dr. Liscow has written
two books, Symie's Story, Early Memories of an Old Jew from South Haven, Michigan which recounts the early memories of South Haven resident,
Si Reznik, as Si told them to Dr. Liscow and Diving into Sunsets, A Physicians Memoir of his Dying Dog and Dad which

|Ruth McDowell, P.A.
McDowell, PA-C, has been a Physician Assistant for 12 years. She is Certified by the NCCPA. Ruth earned her Bachelors
degree in Medical Technologies from Long Island University in New York, and earned her Physician Assistant degree from Western
Michigan University in 1996. Just prior to joining South Haven Family Physicians, Ruth provided emergency services at Zeeland
Hospital. She enjoys many activities with her husband and 2 children.
Patricia Capps, FNP is a board certified Family
Nurse Practitioner. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in nursing in
1985 and her Master’s degree in 1993, both from Northern Illinois University. She spent the
majority of her career providing care for patients undergoing cardiothoracic and vascular
surgery but recently returned to school to specialize in Family Practice. She
recently completed her coursework and certification and now joins the SHFP team.
Pat grew up in a small town in New Jersey but has spent the last
35 years in the suburbs of Chicago. She has raised two daughters who both
attend college in Michigan. She lives in South Haven with her husband and dogs.
|Carol Retberg, RN - Practice Administrator
Retberg earned her RN in nursing from Bronson School of Nursing in 1979, in Kalamazoo, MI. She
joined South Haven Family Physicians in 1990 and became Practice Administrator in 1998. Carol is a member
of Medical Group Management Association and Michigan Medical Group Management Association.
Carol grew up in South Haven and it continues to be her home. She and her husband have two
married sons and four grandchildren. “My favorite activities are reading, shopping, sewing, and playing
with my grandchildren.”
